Acne Laser Treatment

The primary use of the laser in acne treatment is for acne scar removal. Until lasers were in use, improving acne scars was very difficult. Acne scars are often very deep and bound down to the lower tissues. Acne laser treatment uses a laser with a wavelength that actually creates vertical holes in the skin that fill in with scar free tissue as it heals. Lasers can be used in conjunction with chemical peels and microdermabrasion to improve results.

In the last few years two kinds of laser treatments have become available to treat acne. The Diode laser treatments have had promising results. Most patients reported a 37% reduction in blemishes after the first treatment. Within three visits there was an 85% reduction in noticeable blemishes. After four to five treatments most patients had cleared their acne. Both laser treatments have very few side effects.

A topical is applied to prevent discomfort during treatment. Post treatment care is simple. There is slight swelling and redness after the initial treatment but it resolves quickly.

Laser acne treatment is evolving and is proving to be more effective than creams and other topical products. It has substantially less side effects than long term antibiotics.

People are spending billions of dollars a year on various acne treatments and it remains a constant battle to maintain clear skin. Sometimes a combined approach using laser and other treatments is needed to diminish signs of a break out. This procedure is gaining in popularity and more dermatologists are offering this option.

Cost is certainly a factor in choosing to try laser treatment. A session typically costs around $500.00 and that sounds like a lot of money. When you factor in all the money you may spend on creams, prescriptions, and cleansers, you may spend that much or more in a year. The laser shrinks the sebaceous glands beneath your skin. This will not hurt your skin and swelling and discoloration are rare. It is completely painless unlike dermabrasion and chemical peels. Erbium laser treatment is often used to remove wrinkles and scars. Carbon dioxide lasers vaporize parts of the skin and may be painful, but it is highly effective and removes pimples permanently. It can cause discoloration of the skin for a short period of time.

Think about what you want from the the acne laser treatment. Only you can decide if the cost is worth it. If you have struggled with other therapies for years with poor results, this may be the option for you. It is a surgical procedure but takes less than an hour and there is very little down time. Some people have done on a lunch break. Talk with your dermatologist and get all the information you need to make a decision on laser acne treatment.
